Green Belt Movement
Kenya based Green Belt Movement was founded in 1977 by Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai, with a mission to mobilize community consciousness for self-determination, equity, improved livelihoods and security, and environmental conservation.
The Green Belt Movement is one of the most prominent women’s civil society organizations advocating for human rights and supporting good governance and peaceful democratic change through the protection of the environment. Its mission is to empower communities worldwide to protect the environment and to promote good governance and cultures of peace.
Through its holistic approach to development, the Green Belt Movement addresses the underlying social, political, and economic causes of poverty and environmental degradation at the grassroots level.
