Environment-related TLD Applications Jun 15

Overview
In a widely covered June 13 announcement ICANN revealed a total of 1,930 applications for new top-level domains (TLDs). The full list of applied for TLDs can be found here. There were six environment-related TLD proposals: BIO, EARTH, ECO, GREEN, ORGANIC, and SOLAR.

.BIO and one .ECO Applicant Propose Protections
Big Room’s .ECO proposal is ‘community’ designated. Community applications must have independent oversight and put in place registration policies that protect the community. These policies are explained in Big Room’s proposal. Starting Dot proposes that .BIO domain names registered by businesses active in the organic food and agricultural industries will be governed by the applicable regulations set forth for those industries by the European Union and that it would otherwise be unrestricted.
